Andrew Buckingham

Senior Software Consultant

Growing up sharing a house with a BBC Micro, there was some inevitability that I’d end up in software development. I briefly tried to change my fate by reading a degree in Physics and Engineering, in the beautiful city of Durham. By the time I graduated, Durham had found a place in my heart… Physics equations: less so. But as software development was always my passion, that’s what I set off to do.

I began by working on bespoke software integration, where that science and engineering background served me well: helping me to analyse problems and be creative with solutions. I went on to enjoy roles in games development, order processing systems, and manufacturing systems; finally moving away from software into IT management.

As Head of IT, I was exposed to a wider world of business challenges and opportunities. It imbued a real understanding of what many Waterstons clients face: striving for the best solution; while working within real-world constraints such as time and budget. Fascinating and challenging in equal measure!

But that desire to be in software development came calling again… So in 2019, I was delighted to join Waterstons as part of the Bespoke team. I’d come to know Waterstons from the other side of the fence as a client, and the chance to work with such a talented bunch was too good an opportunity to miss!

Outside of work, I enjoy time with my family: our child is very effective at creating excuses for me to buy more LEGO sets for us to build (together…). I’m interested in most things science, nature, or engineering-related. Photography figures sporadically on the interests list, unless exercise beckons in which case we’d be out cycling or playing badminton.
