Elana Wong

Information Security Consultant

I think this is the part where I say I've had tech in my bones from day one, programming tiny computers in the womb, but, truthfully, I probably only seriously considered its possibilities as I booked my train for the first Waterstons assessment day.

Though I've lived in the UK for the past few years, I've spent the majority of my life in Southeast Asia, born in Malaysia and moving to Singapore for high school. I did my undergraduate degree in Liberal Arts at King's College London, moving on to an MSc in Sociology and Global Change at the University of Edinburgh before starting at Waterstons in 2018. Despite studying a wide range of subjects, varying from human geography, literature, race studies and economic sociology, I have always been deeply interested in how people and processes engage and respond to risk and change. The world of cyber seemed an incredibly interesting and relevant next step in our increasingly connected, digitalised world.

Three things attracted me to the company: a love of problem-solving (or, perhaps, a strong dislike of inefficiency), the need to keep learning, and Waterstons' strong values and 'people first' ethos. Looking back, all of these, especially helping others, have been important aspects of my life and I hope to channel all these passions into my work as part of the Cyber and Transformation teams.

Outside of work

When I'm not at work I like to juggle far too many hobbies (including but not limited to cooking, art, and yoga), attend as many of the million free talks offered in London as possible, and pursue my love of languages and travelling. I also continue to assist a student initiative I helped start in Edinburgh that works with the local refugee community to raise awareness and funds for partnered charities through film events and an annual art exhibition.
