Ellie McBride

Office Administrator

From a very early age I’ve been interested in technology, in particular digital media. As a kid one of my favourite pastimes was playing on my uncle’s 1970s Asteroids machine. I remember marvelling at the 3D graphics of those early Playstation games where characters consisted of only a few blocks, yet you were still able to lose yourself in the story and be transported to another world. It was this passion that lead me to get my first class honours degree in Computer Games Design and I still have a real interest in the boundaries where technology meets art.

Over the years I’ve had a few customer facing roles, the most recent being an admin/receptionist for my family’s small independent business. It was through these experiences that I realised just how much I like to help others and the satisfaction I get from solving problems. Alongside this, I’ve freelanced as a digital artist, creating for a variety of different projects from card game designs to children’s book illustrations and even an animated comic for a University cancer research team.

Waterstons caught my attention through its strong identity and core values that really resonated with me personally. I joined in August 2018 as a member of the shared services team where I get to apply my customer service experience in a technology-centred environment, it’s a win-win situation. Most importantly, it’s the ‘people first’ mentality that draws you in and invites you to stay; a company ethos that it so unique and clearly the foundation that is Waterstons. It’s a company that encourages you to grow not only on a professional level, but on a personal level as well; challenging you to look beyond your current limits. What is most refreshing about working here is the endless possibilities and I’m excited at the prospect of where my career path within Waterstons may take me.

Outside of work I love to immerse myself in anything creative. I’m passionate about digital art, especially creature and character design and I can lose myself for hours at a time! Playing musical instruments is another interest of mine, I’m trained as a classical guitarist and I’m also the drummer in a Durham-based punk band. Excitingly, we’ve very recently been signed by an independent record label called Everything Sucks (which it doesn’t). On weekends my partner and I love nothing more than taking the family dog ‘Louis’ out for muddy walks, that’s if my mum will let us steal him for a few hours!
