Elma Neil

Senior Project Manager

Before Waterstons

I began my IT journey many years ago as an undergraduate placement student with IBM. After graduating with a degree in computing studies, I took the first step of my career joining a telecommunications systems provider as a software engineer. My subsequent career moves, to DHL Systems and then with Fujitsu Services each provided new opportunities for me to work on a wider variety of exciting, large scale, technical infrastructure projects.

I moved to financial services in 2008, starting in architecture and governance and as the company grew my role expanded. I quickly found myself managing a growing infrastructure team covering BAU and service management projects and this is where my project management skills were developed and refined. I found project management to be enjoyable and very challenging given it pushed (and tested!) my technical and people skills. This experience taught me that successful project delivery depends not only on skilled juggling of competing priorities and risks but, just as much, on communication and understanding. As a result, I have become more flexible and in recent years, I have sought to combine agile and traditional methods in my approach, with an emphasis on what works and what is right for the client.

Life at Waterstons

In 2019 I decided to broaden my horizons and seek work in different industries with a wider variety of people and project challenges. After a brief spell as a consultant project manager, I was contacted about an opportunity at Waterstons and was immediately impressed by what I saw, especially by their commitment to personal development and the variety of clients they help.

Outside work

When I am not working, I like getting outside hiking, cycling off-road (preferably mountains), running (not very fast), lifting weights, and yoga. I am also a member of a book club and enjoy hosting themed book club evenings and cooking. I have always loved music, playing guitar, and going to see my favourite bands (pop, metal, classical and everything in between.)
