Jeffrey Long

Transformation Consultant

I was born and raised in South Africa. As such, from an early age I fell in love with the bushveld, wildlife, wide open spaces, mountains and their conservation. True to my South African heritage, I am an avid football, cricket and rugby fan. I have now also ventured into the more obscure sporting world of ultra-trail running with the aspiration of qualifying for UTMB, their equivalent of the world cup.

Naturally, my affinity to nature and sports led to a corresponding career in … commercial law. I read for an LLB at the University of Witwatersrand in my home town of Johannesburg and completed a course in International Trade Law at the University of Bern in Switzerland before completing my legal articles at Cliff Dekker Hofmeyr (previously DLA Piper Cliffe Dekker Hofmeyr). It was at Cliffe Dekker Hofmeyr where I began to hone my commercial skills with experience in mergers and acquisitions, commercial litigation and corporate labour law.

After two and a half years of trying to re-enact one of my favourite TV shows, Suits, I decided to fulfil another life long dream of backpacking around South East Asia. After an adventure, beach and good food (read curry, lots of curry) filled eight months of backpacking, I made my way to the University of Edinburgh, Scotland, where I read for an LLM Innovation, Technologies and the Law.

It was in Edinburgh where I was able to amalgamate my legal, commercial and technological experiences into a personal interest in technology driven business development with a particular focus on the integral role technology plays within M&A deals. At Waterstons, I am part of a dynamic team of consultants who are able to provide both pre-deal IT due diligence and transition advice as well as post deal transition support with the ultimate goal of helping our clients develop their business through the effective use of technology.
