Rachael Turner

Bespoke Consultant

I am a third year Computer Science student from Newcastle University and will be spending my industrial placement year at Waterstons. Having been to an all-girls school prior to university, and being the only person to take Computing A-level, I had to spend a lot of time outside of school doing online coding courses to develop my passion for programming. I also attended a Cambridge Coding Summer school for girls to get some real experience and finally meet some other girls interested in coding.

I am particularly excited to be joining the Waterstons team because of the opportunities, I will have to produce bespoke applications, using the latest technologies, whilst interacting and building relationships with a variety of clients. I hope my placement year will allow me to both apply and develop my pre-existing skills within a team of like-minded developers.

Outside of work my main hobby is coxing. I have coxed at a couple of rowing clubs over the past six years - I steer the boat and coach the crew (I don’t just sit there and shout ‘row, row, row’ repeatedly!) Despite the cold winter training sessions and early mornings, I find the rewards I get out of coaching my team are beyond worth it. I have competed all over the country in male and female crews of all ages, and even helped teach a blind lady to row. I also love to bake whenever I can, although I have learnt student kitchens are not the ideal location!
