Rob Burgess

Executive Bespoke Consultant Specialist in Mobile Development

After completing my degree in Chemistry, at Durham University in 2011, I began working as a software developer at Waterstons. Since joining, I have worked on many interesting projects in a range of technologies and for a variety of clients. One key project was the development of a brand new web-based system for a social research company, which manages their projects and coordinates the people being interviewed. This was a really exciting project to be involved in, working closely with developers from the client to produce a fantastic system. I have now moved in to a specialist role within the development team, focussing on mobile development. In this role I get to work on enterprise mobile application, on a multitude of platforms and devices.

Why Software Development?

One question you might be asking yourself is why a chemistry graduate would go straight into a job in software development. I have always had a passion for technology since an early age, growing up in an exciting time where technology have been developing at a huge pace. I started focussing more on software development in my spare time when I was sixth form, and continued to develop websites in my spare time at university. Through this, I decided that I preferred software development as a career rather than chemistry, and that led me to the job I’m in now.

Outside of Work

When I’m not working, I enjoy watching or playing a variety of sports. I’m a huge fan of Arsenal and have to watch them whenever they’re on television. I’m also a supporter of Durham Cricket Club and enjoy watching the Twenty20 in Chester-Le-Street after work. Aside from sport I have an interest in photography, although I don’t get out with my camera as much as I would like. Of course, being a bit of a geek, I also enjoy playing quite a lot of computer games (my latest hook being ‘Civ 5’, although I keep getting drawn back to a bit of ‘League of Legends’).
