Mike Waterston

I was qualified in Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering at the University of Southhampton in 1969 and subsequently progressed to being awarded an MSc and PhD in high temperature gas physics related research. I met and subsequently married Sally during my time as a student.

I have 40 years of business experience having left University to join Tioxide Group PLC in 1975 to work in their research laboratory in Stockton. I spent 19 years at Tioxide progressing to membership of the ruling Executive Committee and having responsibility for R&D, Engineering and IT for the whole group. This experience also included several years of production related activity, in both the UK and at various overseas locations. I was also a member of ICI Industries ‘IT Strategy’ team.

In 1994 I left Tioxide to join Waterstons, and Sally, to pursue a career in IT Consultancy and Services. Our business has grown on the back of the strategic, business and IT skills that Sally and I have brought into the organisation. Our collective experience fuelled our determination that Waterstons would pursue a progressive and empowering management culture, which we believe has underpinned our success at retaining people and winning several consecutive IIP Gold awards. At the centre of business strategy is total emphasis on delivering great customer service and our focus on helping our clients derive material benefit from the technology they have, or might, invest in. Hence our “Performance through Technology” strap line and mantra.

During the time I have been Managing Director of Waterstons I have also been appointed to the role of Deputy Chairman of the County Durham and Darlington NHS Foundation Trust and I am the Chairman of Willow Burn Hospice.

My specialist interests include business strategy development, aligning IT resources with strategic need and resolving the communications problems that invariably exist between business people and their technology contemporaries. I also specialise in serving the Higher Education market. I particularly enjoy all aspects of running a business but especially problem solving, business development and dealing with people.

Outside of work I have a great interest in music, high-fidelity equipment and cars; I’m an avid viewer of Formula 1. I also take great pleasure in spending time with my family, particularly my daughters-in-law, and my grandchildren. What you may not know about me is that I have a large collection of collectible teddy bears, which Sally says is because I never had one as a child.
