Waterstons and Teesside University Honour the Legacy of Richard Begg with Memorial Hackathon
At Waterstons, we were deeply honoured to partner with Teesside University to host a memorial hackathon celebrating the life and legacy of our much-missed colleague and friend, Richard Begg.
Richard, who studied at Teesside University between 1994 and 1998, joined Waterstons after graduation and went on to make an incredible impact here, both through his innovative work and his generous spirit. His passing in 2022 was a profound loss to everyone who knew him, but his influence continues to inspire us every day.
This special hackathon brought together student teams from across Teesside University to develop innovative solutions addressing real-world challenges, an approach that perfectly reflected Richard’s passion for technology, creativity, and problem-solving. The event focused on three key themes that resonated with Richard’s interests: Artificial Intelligence, Chatbots, and Health Initiatives.
Three student teams rose to the challenge, delivering impressive and inspiring projects:
-
HERA – A menstrual health app featuring ethical AI companions, built using Feminist HCI and NHS guidance.
-
MiniMoments – An AI-powered support app for parents of premature babies, offering tracking tools and care advice.
-
QuickCare – A digital assistant providing fast health guidance using NHS pathways and AI triage.
A judging panel made up of representatives from Waterstons and Teesside University had the difficult task of selecting a winner, but the standard of work was so high that we simply couldn’t choose just one. All three teams were awarded prizes sponsored by Waterstons, recognising their creativity, technical skill, and the innovative spirit that Richard embodied.
Reflecting on the event, Alison Dent, CSER Lead at Waterstons, said:
“Rich was passionate about pushing the boundaries of technology, embracing risk, but always having fun. He loved hackathons, and his creations are the stuff of legend here at Waterstons. We’re determined to keep Rich’s legacy alive, so teaming up with Teesside University, where he studied, to inspire the next generation to think differently, take risks, and challenge themselves felt very fitting. We were massively impressed with what the students achieved and hope to see their finished apps available one day.”
The hackathon was also a reflection of the strong, ongoing partnership between Waterstons and Teesside University. Together, we’re committed to nurturing the next generation of digital and creative leaders, continuing Richard’s legacy of innovation, mentorship, and making technology a force for good.
At Waterstons, we believe Richard would have been proud of what this event achieved. His spirit of curiosity, courage, and kindness lives on in our people, in our work, and now, in the students who are carrying his passion forward.
