What advice would you give to the next generation?
Be yourself; don’t feel pressured to adopt a culture that’s not welcoming to you as you are. Rather seek out the companies that value you for who you are. Vigorously resist engaging with the old stereotypes of tech culture.
Who is your woman in tech role model?
Maybe obviously, but Sally Waterston. It’s one of those moments in your life that you remember with crystal clarity: the first time I heard Sally speak to an audience of professionals and describe her vision for how tech companies should behave. I knew from that point forwards that I wanted to work for Waterstons.
What is the best piece of advice you’ve been given from a woman in tech?
Sally again! The concept of emotional bank account. Always pay more into it than you would need to take out; the world works better on goodwill.
